Every school attorney has the same recurring nightmare. It begins with an IEP goal that reads “Student will improve in reading.” It ends in a due process hearing or state special education complaint. Somewhere in the middle, someone says, “But we have always done it this way.” We would like fewer of those nightmares. For your district’s sake. (And, fine, a little for ours.)
We built Special Education Teacher Rookies & Refreshers, an on-demand training series for special education teachers in South Dakota, Wyoming, and Nebraska. Each of the eight sessions runs 20 to 30 minutes, which is shorter than most staff meetings and significantly more useful. Teachers can watch during a planning period, after school, or while grading.
What Your Teachers Will Walk Away With
A working knowledge of special education legal requirements, learned the easy way instead of the subpoena way
The ability to decode FAPE, LRE, and PLAAFP
Tips for drafting IEP goals that are actually measurable, rather than aspirational poetry
Services built around student needs, not around “whatever’s on the schedule Tuesday”
Handouts: Many sessions include handouts teachers can use immediately: tools for auditing existing goals, step-by-step guides for drafting compliant ones, and frameworks for building appropriate services. Print them, laminate them, tape them to the monitor. We won’t judge.
Creative Uses for the Busy Administrator
Onboarding: Give new hires a strong start before IEP season gives them a rude one.
Refreshers: Perfect for veterans whose last special ed training involved an overhead projector.
Plans of improvement: The sessions and handouts make structured, documentable “homework” for teachers who need targeted support. Turns out teachers get homework too.
Team PD: Watch together, audit real IEPs, and find out which goals need a little love.
